The
Women's Imaging Center is a department specifically dedicated to
diagnostic imaging of women's health problems. The Center
incorporates specialists in this field: radiologists, nurses,
radiological technologists, and administrative support, all clearly
oriented to the patient and working together with related
specialists in a multidisciplinary approach. The Center forms part
of the Breast Disease Unit, which encompasses different clinical
specialties (Gynecology, Oncology, Pathology,...) that work
together to provide integrated care. We combine state-of-the-art
technology with a professional team that has pioneered the
incorporation and use of new diagnostic technologies in our
country.
In
1992
we became the first center in the country to offer magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast and we started stereotactic
core biopsy with 14 G needles. In the year 2000 the core biopsy
system was upgraded to a prone digital table with vacuum-assisted
core biopsy using 11 G needles.
We have been performing MRI-guided
vacuum-assisted core biopsy since
1997. In 2001 a CAD (computer-assisted diagnosis) system for second
reading of mammograms was incorporated.
We have been the referral center for the community breast cancer
screening program since 1996.
In
2004 we incorporated two full-field digital mammography units with
selenium detectors, and we have been working in a totally digital,
filmless environment and storing all mammograms (both screening and
regular practice) in a digital archive (PACS) since June 2004.
In 2005
we incorporated a new system for computer-assisted digital
diagnosis (CAD).
